Pet-Friendly Bed and Breakfast

Most lodging in the Highcountry is not pet friendly.  Owners and managers sometimes mistakenly think pets cause damage, when the truth is guests can cause as much or more damage.

At Banner Haven Bed and Breakfast, we welcome all pets that are current on rabies and common vaccinations.

DSC_0113

In order to protect your pet, the next guest’s pet and our own, we require a copy of your pet’s vaccination records.  All pets must be up-to-date on rabies vaccines, along with Bordetella (“Kennel Cough”) and Parvo-Virus.  As these viruses can live in the soil for years, we want to avoid exposure and protect all that visit.

DSC_0092

Unfortunately, we are unable to allow any pets to visit without a copy of these vaccinations and have been forced to turn away guests who show up without their pets records.

DSC_0038

We invite you to bring your pets.

While we love all pets, we can’t allow pets that are under six (6) months of age or who are not housebroken.

If you make a reservation, please let us know if a pet will be joining you.

Come visit the NC Mountains and enjoy all the Highcountry has to offer.  Bring your pet and enjoy the area.

Snow Blanketed Banner Elk and NC Highcountry

As the temperatures dropped, snow blanketed Banner Elk and the North Carolina Highcountry.

Cold weather brought another boost to the Highcountry ski resorts as more than 15″ of new snow fell at Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain Ski Resorts, bringing in large crowds for a weekend that normally doesn’t see large groups.  Sugar Mountain opened the whole mountain and covered every slope with deep snow as visitors started coming in Thursday afternoon.

While the new snow meant more business for everyone in Banner Elk, there are some that don’t look forward to winter and the “mess it brings”.   As today brought sunny skies and warmer temps, locals and visitors worked to free cars and trucks from several days of snow.

The beauty brings people from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and as far away as Texas.  The NC Highcountry is the first stop for anyone from the south, who might be looking for snow or skiing.

There are few places in the country that provide such a wonderfully diverse group of activities all year.  Besides the Carolinas, only California has skiing and surfing in the same day.

In addition to Banner Haven B&B, local businesses, like the Perry House and Azalea Inn, look forward to snow to bring in guests.  Our economy is based on tourism and the new means big dollars for Banner Elk and the surrounding areas, like Valle Crucis and Boone.

Life continues, as students from Lees McRae College and volunteers at the Banner Elk Chamber continue life as usual.

Don’t just come visit.  Come visit and stay for ever.  Banner Elk and the Highcountry are beautiful places to live, where taxes are reasonable, the real estate is affordable.

If you want to come visit, or you’re thinking about moving, give Greg and Amy a call – at Banner Haven Bed and Breakfast.

High Water Remains in Stormy Aftermath

Tags

24 Hours after one of the biggest rain storms in Highcountry memory, high water levels remain throughout the area and dangerously cold temperatures have made driving and even walking on wet surfaces a daunting task.  Everything that got wet in the rain storm has frozen solid in the nearly 20 degree temperatures.

DSC_0001 DSC_0003

Water hasn’t receded enough not to spill over roadways and driveways.  This is the scene at many Highcountry homes and businesses; water overflowing and threatening to freeze.

DSC_0004

Standing water remains in spots all over Avery and Watauga Counties.

DSC_0006 DSC_0007

If you recall these shots from last night’s post; shot from the same location.  The sign is still not out of the water and the normally calm spillway at Mill Pond, in Banner Elk, is running almost as strong.

DSC_0008 DSC_0009

This scene has been replayed all over the area.  Work crews trying to dig out drains that became unstable and collapsed during the rain storm.

At this location, water was running across the road instead of beneath it.  Work crews had to dig out the dig clogging the drain pipe.

DSC_0011 DSC_0012 DSC_0010

More shots from the same locations as last night’s blog show the water has gone down but still has a long way to go.

Highcountry roads are going to continue to be dangerous for the next few days as water freezes and new snow comes down.

If you must be out on the roads, take extra care and time getting to your destination.

Rain Dashes Hopes of Good Ski Weekend

Torrential rains bring road closures, flooded basements, washed out ski slopes and more.

Highway 321, from Blowing Rock to Boone was almost impassible at 6pm and was closed to traffic about 30 minutes after driving up.  Rocks, limbs, and other debris has been washed onto the road surface making section to bad to drive without a 4X4.  Small cars war having trouble dodging or driving over some of the larger rocks.

IMG_8383 IMG_8384

More than a foot of water at the intersection of Hight 105 and 321 made it dangerous for all but the largest vehicles.

IMG_8396 IMG_8397

At a local campground, the road was completely covered with water, making it impossible for any cabin residence to come or go.  Water was also flooding their store, as the owners fought back the water with cinder block, railroad ties, and push brooms.  At the time of this photo, it seemed to be a loosing battle.

IMG_8399The Mill Pond in Banner Elk was several feet above normal.  The top of the sign, seen in this photo, is normally well above water level, warning visitors about the nearby dam.

More than a foot of water in the basement of the Azalea Inn seems to still be rising as the rain continues to fall.

Snow Making and Below Zero Temps Bring the Snow

Beach Mountain and Sugar Mountain are blowing snow.

As temperatures dip lower, more snow can be made.  Snowmaking stars at 32 degrees and some “guns” blow an inch every hour.  But, as temps fall into the twenties, more water means 2+ inches an hour.  When the mercury hits the low twenties, some guns will dump 6-8 inches of new snow in the mountain every.

If you enjoy skiing, plan your trip now.

Fresh snow means more than just skiing, at Sugar Mountain, where snow shoeing adventures can be taken with a ski school guide.

Fresh snow does mean great skiing.

Snow is Back

Snow comes back to Banner Elk and packs in the skiers.

Last weekend and earlier this week, we had people calling to cancel reservations for this weekend.

We let them.

Now we’re packed.

Banner Haven and Azalea Inn are both full.  Both inns are 100% occupied tonight and have many people staying over until Monday to catch some extra runs on the Holiday Monday.

Next weekend, we’re looking at a few more inches of snow – on top of the 10 inches we got 24 hours ago.  Skiing os going to be great and the slopes are not charging holiday rates.

If you can get away during the week, give us a call.

Enjoy a mid-week discount and almost empty slopes.
